The new Asics GT-2150 running shoes are the latest in the line of Asics support shoes that aim to be both lightweight and durable whilst at the same time not compromising on cushioning and support, making them one of the best all round mid support shoe for distance running on the market.
Background to stability running shoes
Stability shoes are best suited for runners that have a mild to medium overpronation running gait as they control the inward role of the foot that occurs when the runners foot hits the ground and moves from heel to forefoot. Overpronation is usually caused by a low or collapsed arch of the foot and is common in flat footed runners. If you think that you might be flatfooted or need stability shoes then see this RunnersWorld article.
Asics GT-2150 Design
The Asics GT-2150’s have been designed with stability in mind. Unlike the Asics Gel 1150’s they have more support in the mid section of the shoe which makes them better suited for runners that have lower arches and therefore need to get slightly more motion control out of their shoes.
I originally used to run in the Asics GT 1130’s and was very happy with their performance; but two-ish years of marathon training led to my arches collapsing further and therefore on my next trip to the shoe store the shop assistant recommended that I move towards a shoe that offers me more support. I was only too happy to oblige and have now been running in the Asics GT 2150’s for about two months now.
Asics GT-2150 Performance
I had a few initial worries that the Asics GT-2150’s would completely alter my style of running as they have more support in than my last pair of trainers but I honestly didn’t notice any difference in the way that I run. The shoes rubbed slightly on the arch of my foot during my first few runs but they loosened up quickly and now they feel as comfortable as my old pair of battered trainers!
Now that I have been out on a good number of long distance runs wearing the shoes I can see the Asics prised foam heel moulding system at work and there is definitely a nice indentation where my heel sits within the shoe. This is supposed to add additional support and provide an individual fit for each runner but all I know is that my heel fits nice and snug into the back of the shoe and feels pretty well supported even on rough terrain.
This maybe completely psychological and irrelevant but I feel that the Asics GT-2150’s are a faster shoe than my old GT-1130’s. Maybe it has something to do with the fact they now my foot has the additional support that it needs it makes the transition from heel strike to forefoot liftoff more quickly than in my old shoes. To be fair it could just be due to that new shoe feeling that we all get when we buy a new pair of running trainers but whatever it is; It works for me!
The tread on the Asics shoes is deeper than the 1150’s probably because they are made to take into account more overpronation and therefore more instability. I have taken the shoes out on muddy trails and almost every other terrain I can think of and although that are not a specific trail running shoe, they seem to grip on to everything bar the thick mud that you find on woodland trails.
Why the Asics GT-2150’s over other makes of shoe?
Whilst I shopping around for the right pair of trainers, I had to entertain the idea of a few other models and makes before finally deciding on the GT 2150’s.
I was almost persuaded by the Nike Triax+ shoe, as it is a much lighter shoe thanks to its air cushioning system instead of the Asics’s gel cushioning system. However, after some research I discovered that the gel cushioning system in the Asic’s GT-2150’s is much more durable then the Nike Triax+ air cushioning meaning that the expected lifespan of the Asics is much greater than the Nikes. The cheapskate in me couldn’t be persuaded otherwise and I went for the Asics GT-2150’s! I might however buy a pair of the Nike Traix+ shoes as they are a lighter shoe for running in and although not suited for the stresses of long distance training would be great for road races.
Asics GT-2150 price and where to buy.
Considering that the Asic’s GT-2150′s are one of the newest shoes on the market for medium overpronators I was very happy to pay what I did for the shoe especially considering the fact that the gel cushioning system means that they will outlast any Nike or Brookes air cushioning equivalent. I have been running in the GT-2150’s for about two months now and couldn’t be happier with tem.

Looks like you have joined the ranks of us support shoe wearing pro’s!
I am almost on my second pair now I have been running so much lately!
Leave them at the gym again like your last two pairs did you! Mate you spend more on running shoes in a year than most people do in a lifetime! You should get an advertising deal form Asics or something…although I guess that would entail actually being a talented runner! haha
I am looking at running shoes and tried on the Asics GT-2130 and I found the have amazing forefoot cushioning do the Asics GT-2120s have the same amount of cushioning?
Not sure about the 2120′s but the 2150′s definitely have more cushioning than last years version.
